Facts: Munitions Handling Lift Assist

By John Cummins | PCAPP Facts | Comments are Closed | 19 February, 2022 | 0

Provides information on air-powered, manually-operated Munitions Handling Lift Assist machines, also known as Industrial Manipulators, that enable the safe, ergonomic and efficient handling of materials of nearly any size, weight or shape.

Facts: Automated Guided Vehicle

By John Cummins | PCAPP Facts | Comments are Closed | 12 April, 2021 | 0

Provides an overview of Automated Guided Vehicles, or AGVs, which carry mustard-filled munitions between the Enhanced Reconfiguration and Agent Processing Buildings at the Pueblo plant.

Facts: Agent Filtration Area

By John Cummins | PCAPP Facts | Comments are Closed | 12 April, 2021 | 0

Describes how a series of 10 air filter units of the Agent Filtration Area eliminates the possibility of a release of mustard agent vapors during plant operations.

Facts: Munitions Washout System

By John Cummins | PCAPP Facts | Comments are Closed | 12 April, 2021 | 0

Explains the steps of the Munitions Washout System, and how it drains and cleans chemical agent from munitions during the chemical weapons destruction process.

Facts: Munitions Treatment Unit

By John Cummins | PCAPP Facts | Comments are Closed | 12 April, 2021 | 0

Provides an overview of the Munitions Treatment Unit, which heats munitions to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes to ensure decontamination before metal can be shipped offsite.

During Baseline Reconfiguration activities, ordnance technicians wear bright green, high visibility heel grounds over rubber boots to dissipate any static buildup.

Antistatic Gear Improves Safety

Safety efforts appear in many different forms, and colors, at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant.

A robotic arm places a munition into a Cavity Access Machine (CAM) during training exercises at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant. CAMs, which are a part of the Munitions Washout System, wash out chemical agent from munition bodies with high-pressure, hot water.

Washout System Tested for Optimal Performance

By John Cummins | PCAPP News, Technology | Comments are Closed | 28 July, 2017 | 0

Experts at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant are optimizing the Munitions Washout System and completing a process required by pilot test demonstrations.

A munition, used in high heel testing, sits on the Munition Treatment Unit discharge conveyor. Its paint was cooked off, down to metal, which is not typical for normal processing and is indicative of heel being present in the munition.

Heel Test Anticipates Plant Washout System Failures

By John Cummins | PCAPP News, Technology | Comments are Closed | 28 February, 2017 | 0

Testing was performed at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) in February to determine what a failure in the Munitions Washout System (MWS) would mean during full-scale operations.

  • A Cavity Access Machine drains mustard agent from a projectile inside the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant. Before splash guards were installed, pressure in some rounds caused agent to splatter on the machine and protectively-coated floor.
  • A Cavity Access Machine operates inside the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant after a splash guard was installed on the machine. Splash guards eliminate hours spent cleaning up contamination.

Solution Devised for Over-Pressurized Rounds

By John Cummins | PCAPP News, Technology | Comments are Closed | 17 February, 2017 | 0

When pressurized chemical weapons at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) caused a disruption to the processing of the munitions, staff responded by creating a solution.

The Pueblo plant’s Munition Treatment Units heat munition bodies and mortar baseplates to a minimum temperature of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 15 minutes in order to thermally destroy any residual agent.

Heating Technique to Eliminate Residual Chemical Agent

By John Cummins | PCAPP News, Technology | Comments are Closed | 5 April, 2016 | 0

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) will use the Munitions Treatment Unit (MTU) to eliminate residual chemical agent from munitions, employing a heating technique similar to baking a pizza. “The MTU is essentially a large pizza oven, about 80 feet long,” said Kent Ladd, training specialist. “After a thorough washing, the munitions spend aboutRead more
