PUEBLO CHEMICAL DEPOT, Colo. – Officials confirmed processing has begun of the first mustard agent-filled munitions today in the heavily automated facility built to destroy the chemical weapons stockpile stored at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot.

Representatives from regulatory agencies observe as a Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant technician gets sealed into the Demilitarization Protective Ensemble. The evaluations certify the plant, paper and people are ready to start processing mustard agent.

Pueblo Plant One Step Closer to Operations

Demonstrations showing the workers, facilities and systems are ready to conduct operations were completed in August, moving the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) one step closer to agent operations.

Special Containers Protect Some Projectiles

Experts at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant use stainless and carbon steel containers to package and store some projectiles that are not well suited for the facility’s heavily-automated process.

Making the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, or PCAPP, biotreatment system work the way it is intended is a key priority for Army leaders overseeing the project.

A delivery of biomass from the Pueblo Wastewater Reclamation Facility arrived at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant on June 1. The biomass is used to seed the biotreatment process for destruction of thiodiglycol, the main ingredient of agent hydrolysate.

Last Systemization Turnovers Move Plant Closer to Pilot Testing

On June 24, Biotreatment Area systems were turned over from systemization to operations, nearly completing the systemization phase at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant.

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant’s Brine Reduction System, the last step of the Biotreatment Process, recovers water from biosludge producing a salt cake. The water is then recycled back into the plant.

Neutralization and Biotreatment Process at Pueblo Plant Explained

The citizens of Colorado selected neutralization followed by biotreatment as an alternative to incineration for the Colorado stockpile of mustard agent munitions stored at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot.

During training exercises, a worker uses a lift assist to place a simulated munition on a conveyor in the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant’s Enhanced Reconfiguration Building. This is an example of the first block in a system designed to align plant readiness activities with permit requirements.

A group of Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant monitoring technicians sniffs for and identifies odors from the facility to ensure the environmental protection of communities surrounding the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot.

Joseph Deines, ordnance technician, Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, uses a custom tool to remove an ignitor cartridge from a simulated chemical-agent mortar. The tool was designed and produced through collaboration with workers from the Bechtel Pueblo Team, the Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives and the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center.
