The U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot is home to three types of munitions filled with mustard agent, and the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant is working to destroy the weapons in three campaigns to meet its goal of finishing by Dec. 31, 2023.

Pueblo Plant Begins Static Detonation Chamber Assembly

The first Static Detonation Chamber component was placed on its concrete pad Oct. 31 at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, marking the start of assembly for the first of three units that will augment the main plant’s automated processes.

  • The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant is pursuing a final Part B Hazardous Waste Operating Permit, which will govern the processing of the remaining chemical munitions stockpile.

Chemical Demilitarization in the Classroom

Students at a local school, not far from the heavily automated plant destroying chemical weapons, are learning that robots come in all shapes and sizes.

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant has destroyed more than 1,000 U.S. tons of mustard agent in the obsolete chemical weapons stockpile stored in Colorado.

Ordinance technicians on the baseline reconfiguration team at the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant remove a mustard agent-filled 4.2-inch mortar round from its wooden storage box for disassembly and removal of energetic components before it is placed on a covered pallet in preparation for its eventual destruction in a Static Detonation Chamber. The plant has reconfigured more than half the 4.2-inch rounds in the stockpile.

Principal Deputy Named to Support Pueblo Plant

A veteran of Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives, will join the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in a new role as the program continues toward the goal of eliminating the stockpile of chemical weapons at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot.
