The Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant, or BGCAPP, is in the closure phase, planned to be complete in 2027. From 2019 to 2023, the BGCAPP team destroyed 101,764 projectiles and rockets containing 523.4 tons of GB and VX nerve agent and blister agent mustard, using neutralization and Explosive Destruction Technology. The last chemical weapon in the U.S. stockpile was destroyed July 7, 2023, in Kentucky.
Highlights
- On Aug. 11, the Blue Grass plant workforce broke the U.S. chemical demilitarization program safety record by working more than 17.3 million hours without a lost-time incident. The team continues to value safety and make it a priority as closure work progresses.
- Also on Aug. 11, workers destroyed the last of the 51,059 containerized rocket warheads (CRW) containing residual amounts of GB nerve agent in the Static Detonation Chamber (SDC) 2000.
- Main plant closure activities continue ahead of schedule.
SDC 1200
- As of Aug. 31, 97.5% of more than 17,000 CRWs containing residual amounts of VX nerve agent has been destroyed.
- The last CRWs were moved into the Explosive Destruction Technology Service Magazine to await destruction in the SDC 1200.
- Workers used outage time to replace bottom heaters and water pumps, repair cameras, replace gaskets and seals, clean locking-ring teeth, make tilt-cradle adjustments, and complete other maintenance activities.
SDC 2000
- With destruction of the last of the CRWs containing residual amounts of GB nerve agent, workers began decommissioning the unit while keeping it operational in case it is needed as a back-up to destroy VX nerve agent CRWs.
- As part of decommissioning, workers cleaned the two loading chambers and began preliminary decontamination and cleanout of the detonation chamber and conveyor areas.
Main Plant
- The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection granted permission to end environmental inspections in the Munitions Demilitarization Building (MDB).
- Workers completed isolation of utilities and the final walkdown of the Container Handling Building.
- Unventilated monitoring tests have been successfully completed on all 14 heating, ventilation and air conditioning filter bank units that served the MDB and the last contaminated charcoal filters from the units have been transported to a permitted treatment, storage and disposal facility.
Workforce
- 886 workers are employed on the project, with approximately 50% hired locally.
Upcoming Meetings
- The next semiannual Kentucky Chemical Demilitarization Citizens’ Advisory Commission and Chemical Destruction Community Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. ET at the following location:
