The Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (PEO ACWA) is overseeing the safe and environmentally compliant destruction of the remaining U.S. chemical weapons stockpile located at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot in Colorado and the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky. PEO ACWA is targeting completion of its mission by the Chemical Weapons Convention treaty commitment of Sept. 30, 2023. U.S. Public Law mandates stockpile destruction by Dec. 31, 2023. 

Pueblo Chemical-Agent Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP)

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) safely destroyed chemical weapons stored at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot. Technology known as neutralization followed by biotreatment was used to destroy the majority of mustard agent contained in projectiles. PCAPP employed three Static Detonation Chamber (SDC) units to augment the main plant by destroying all problematic munitions, including 4.2-inch mortar rounds.

Located within the boundaries of the depot, PCAPP includes a variety of facilities for purposes including agent and energetic processing, control and storage; munitions storage; biotreatment; utility; laboratory; personnel maintenance; and other support tasks. 

PCAPP is located on approximately 85 acres, which includes the main plant and 34 acres dedicated to the SDC site consisting of the SDC units, command post, waste laydown yards and firehouse.

Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (BGCAPP)

The Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (BGCAPP) is safely destroying a stockpile of chemical weapons stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot. The Blue Grass Chemical Activity is responsible for the safekeeping of chemical weapons. Neutralization is being used to destroy the nerve agent stockpile. Meanwhile, SDC units were chosen to augment the main plant to destroy the entire mustard munitions stockpile, as well as containerized drained rocket warheads and overpacked munitions.

Located within the boundaries of the depot, BGCAPP includes a variety of facilities for purposes including munitions processing, control and storage; utility; laboratory; personnel maintenance; and other support tasks.

BGCAPP is located on approximately 73 acres, which includes the main plant, Explosive Destruction Technology site, patrol roads, parking lot, fire water pump house area and 15 acres dedicated to the SDC 2000 site.
