Facts: Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass

Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass is under contract to the Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (PEO ACWA) to design, build, test, operate and close the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (BGCAPP).

Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass is a joint venture of Bechtel National Inc., of Reston, Virginia, and Parsons Corporation, of Centreville, Virginia. The joint venture has three teaming subcontractors: Amentum, Battelle Memorial Institute and GP Strategies Corporation.

The companies of the Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass joint venture have been involved collectively in designing, building and/or operating each of the nine U.S. chemical demilitarization facilities. The team’s key managers have experience in all aspects of chemical demilitarization. For decades, the team’s companies have been engaged in community, charitable, educational and job-creation efforts in locations around the globe.

Bechtel National Inc.

Bechtel is a global engineering, construction and project management partner to industry and government, completing landmark projects while creating long-term progress and economic growth. Since the 1980s, Bechtel has had an active role in U.S. and international chemical demilitarization projects in the United States and elsewhere. The company led the team that successfully completed the first destruction of a chemical weapons stockpile in the continental U.S. military site at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and managed a similar project at the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama.

Similar to the Blue Grass plant, Bechtel and its teaming partners are operating the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in Colorado, which it designed, constructed, tested and will later close. In addition, Bechtel has executed numerous Cooperative Threat Reduction projects in the former Soviet Union. Since 1898, Bechtel has helped customers complete more than 25,000 projects—many first-of-a-kind—in 160 countries on all seven continents.

Parsons Corporation

Parsons’ diverse team of planners, engineers and scientists deploy the latest technologies, from digital geophysical mapping to smart building solutions, to deliver cost-effective and dependable engineered systems to the federal government.

Amentum

Amentum, formerly known as AECOM, has more than 36 years of experience with the U.S. chemical weapons elimination program, serving as prime contractor at the following chemical agent disposal facilities: Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Umatilla, Oregon; Anniston, Alabama; Tooele, Utah; and Johnston Atoll, located 825 miles southwest of Hawaii. Along with other companies, Amentum is operating and will close the Blue Grass and Pueblo, Colorado, chemical agent destruction facilities. The company provides a full range of science, engineering, construction and operating services in 14 major markets.

Battelle Memorial Institute

As one of the world’s largest private independent research and development companies, Battelle develops and commercializes technology for a variety of industry and government customers. From creating novel coatings for undersea vessels, designing non-lethal weapons for law enforcement, and devising airborne sensors that assess the integrity of river levees, to currently operating state-of-the-art laboratories at two U.S. chemical agent disposal facilities, Battelle has completed more than 5,000 projects for 1,300 customers. Battelle’s key areas of expertise include environmental technology, defense systems, agrifood, medical products, pharmaceuticals and energy.

GP Strategies Corporation

Founded in 1966, GP Strategies is a global performance improvement company, providing sales and technical training, eLearning solutions, management consulting and engineering services. For more than 28 years, GP Strategies operated the Chemical Demilitarization Training Facility at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, offering courses in chemical demilitarization, laboratory operations, maintenance, emergency response and toxic-area monitoring. Additionally, GP Strategies has provided services at chemical agent disposal facilities in Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Umatilla, Oregon; Anniston, Alabama; Tooele, Utah; Newport, Indiana; Aberdeen, Maryland; Pueblo, Colorado; and Johnston Atoll.
