Workers are advancing placement of two structures on the Static Detonation Chamber 2000 site at the Blue Grass plant.

“The walls and roof panels are now installed on the 7,500-square-foot Personnel Support Facility,” said Aaron Renfro, resident engineer, Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant. “The vertical portions of the rear and side walls of the 80-foot-long Earth-Covered Magazine are also complete.”

The support facility will have offices, showers, a locker room, a break room, and storage for cotton goods, Renfro said. During operations, the magazine will securely store munitions awaiting destruction in the SDC 2000. Both structures are about three months ahead of schedule.

“We’ve persevered despite a very rainy March,” Renfro said. “We’ve been able to work Fridays as make-up days and be productive when the sun shines.”

Along with continued work on the two structures, next steps for the project include work on the combined fire and potable water loop and installation of the sanitary sewer.

“We’ve been busy and we’re about to get busier,” Renfro said.
