In July 2014, the Recovered Chemical Materiel Directorate of the U.S. Army Chemical Materials Activity conducted Qualification Testing of the Explosive Destruction System, Phase Two Retrofit (EDS P2R) unit. This unit will begin chemical demilitarization operations in support of the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant beginning this fall.
The system was fabricated by Sandia National Labs and tested at the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center’s J-field Facility at the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. The testing began with three trials in which the system successfully accessed 105mm and 155mm projectiles, and 4.2-inch mortar rounds, each filled with water to simulate mustard agent. The next three trials had small cylinders filled with three pounds of mustard agent, to verify the ability of the system to access and destroy the agent. The final trial had six cylinders with a total of 72 pounds of agent, which is equivalent to destroying six 155mm projectiles. The system successfully met the treatment goals.
